Adapting to a vegan diet requires a change in your relationship with food and embracing a new lifestyle.

One major motivator is the potential benefits to our health. Consumption of animal fats has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and hypertension.

Some people become vegan due to their concern over animal welfare issues, farming practices and the moral issues of meat consumption. Some vegans take pride in a position, which will however small, help reduce demand for animal based products like meats, gelatine and leather. Some also avoid products that were made from animal testing like cosmetics and drugs.

Whatever the reason, you can begin by reducing your meet intake and by slowly replacing meat with more fruits and vegetables. By focusing on foods that are low in calories and high in nutrients you can quite easily improve your diet and health especially when combined with exercise.

Just like animals, you to can get all the essential nutrition your body needs from plant based food sources such as potatoes, carrots, broccoli, spinach, legumes, soya beans, flax seed, nuts and whole grains. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are very low in fat and contain no cholesterol at all.

Note that diabetics should avoid fruits due to the fructose or fruit sugar which can elevate blood sugar levels.

It will likely take some planning and effort to source new shops for the harder to find foods and test new vegan friendly recipes before you fully settle in to your new routine. As a guide, try to avoid refined products and look for whole grain instead. Try and broaden your range of fruit and vegetables and try replacing dairy products with alternatives made from rice, soya, tofu and almonds.

Remember that it doesn’t have to be boring. Think of stir-fries, hummus, falafels, macaroni, bean burritos and vegetarian supplements and you will already envisage how good your new diet can be.

It can be harder to change your diet if you live in household of none vegans. To make it easier you can gently introduce your vegan diet into your lifestyle and learn along the way what best suits you and what you can accommodate at meal times.
