With the schools out for summer you may be wondering how the kids will keep themselves occupied. Without the school routine, boredom can soon set in and you can’t keep spending on attractions and holidays unless you’re made of money. Closer to home, you can help your child with home crafts that will keep them busy and active throughout the holidays.

You can start by exploring the local parks together and woods or country parks when you’re on your travels. You and your child can collect seed pods, fern leaves, grasses, twigs, acorns wildflowers and anything else you can add to a nature collection. Back home you can let your child loose with glue, glitter glue, poster paints and some stiff cardboard to piece together their very own collage masterpiece.

Now that your child is hooked on home crafts you can inspire them to make a vase for flowers. You can use a tin can with the edges filed smooth. Get hold of some coloured paper first and get your child to decorate it. They could write their name on it and glue beans, seeds or glitter to the letters. They could also paint a summer scene and decorate it with glued on glitter or small stickers of summer things. Let the glue dry before attaching the paper to the outside of the can. Add water and fresh flowers or leave dry for dry flowers. Alternatively your child can use the can for keeping trinkets in or stationery like pens and markers.

Jar vases can make good summer crafts for kids too. To make a jar into a vase it first needs to be sparkling clean. Kids love getting wet in the summer, so let them roll up their sleeves and have fun splashing at the sink while washing the dishes. When the jar is clean and dry, tie a pretty ribbon around the opening. If so desired, decorate the outside of the jar with glued on beads and buttons.

Crafts for kids will provide some great decorations around the home and keep the kids occupied during those long summer months.
